1. On Sundays, the Liturgy of the Word includes an Old Testament reading, a Psalm, a
reading from a New Testament letter, and a reading from a Gospel.
2. The readings are proclaimed from a special stand, called an ambo.
3. The importance of the Gospel reading is expressed by our standing, our singing an
Alleluia (except during Lent), and a procession. The proclamation of the Gospel can
also include the use of candles and incense.
4. The readings are followed by the homily and Nicene Creed, in which we
express our beliefs and renew our baptismal promises.
5. The final part is the Prayer of the Faithful, when we pray for the Church, the world,
and the needs of others.
Reflect on this paragraph from CCH
Just like puzzles, the Liturgy of the Word is composed of smaller individual parts. But
when you put all the parts together, they reveal a bigger picture—they become a unified
liturgical celebration. When we participate at Mass during the Liturgy of the Word,
we should look for that bigger picture that God is revealing through the readings, the
homily, and our response.

To help the students identify anamnesis moments in their lives.
To help the students understand anamnesis and its connection to Passover and Eucharist.

➤ What are some holidays that we celebrate to remember important people or groups of people?
➤ What are some holidays we celebrate to honor people who are important to us?
2. How are these holidays similar to what we do at Mass? How are they different?
Define Anamnesis
After the consecration at Mass, the prayer of remembrance in which the Church calls to mind the Lord's passion, resurrection, and ascension into heaven. This is the high point of the Mass as a memorial of what occurred during Christ's visible stay on earth as a pledge of what he continues to do invisibly through the Eucharist. (Etym. Greek anamn_sis, calling to mind, recollection.)
Explain
The concept of anamnesis is important, for at Mass, we do much more than just
remember. We use symbols and words to help relive what already has happened.

1. The Sacraments are mysteries that help us know God’s love for us.
2. God’s offer of love is called grace. Sacraments make grace present and visible, allowing us to know God’s love.
3. Though God always offers us love and grace, we have to be open to it to allow the love of God to work in our lives.
Begin
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” These words of Winston Churchill,
the great British leader, remind us that the way we approach something is vital to how
we experience it and what we take from it. Attitude is closely linked to expectations. If
we have a bad attitude, we expect something to be awful and then we go into it looking
for awful results. Sometimes we’re pleasantly surprised, but more often than not,
we just focus on the awful. Similarly, if we approach something with excitement and
enthusiasm, we tend to find the good and the fun in the event.
The same is true for Sacraments. Though God’s loving relationship of grace is always
offered to us, we need to be willing to accept it. A person can try to be your friend, but
if you don’t respond, that friendship will never happen. As we celebrate the Sacraments,
we need to be open to God and let God become part of our lives.

Objective
Eucharist, or giving thanks, is a celebration in which we remember
(anamnesis) what Christ has done as well as his saving actions today.
To help the students identify anamnesis moments in their lives.
To help the students understand anamnesis and its connection to Passover and Eucharist.
Prayer

➤ What are some holidays that we celebrate to remember something that happened in the past?

Present
